Things to check before towing
As much as we would like to just hitch up & take off, it just invites a load of problems later on. So it's best to run through a checklist to make sure you are heading off on the right foot. Applicable with towing most RV's.
- Check that the safety chains are correctly connected
- Check that the coupling is correctly and securely fastened
- Fold up the jockey wheel into its travel position
- Check that the front and rear corner stabilisers are in the up position
- Check the trailer brake & light connections are secure and that all lights work
- Check that the towing lights are clearly visible
- Check the number plates are clearly visible
- Ensure your load is properly secured
- Make sure you haven’t overloaded the boot of your vehicle
- Adjust the rear vision mirrors to ensure a clear view of the road to the rear of the vehicle or vehicle combination
- Make sure the gas cylinders are turned off & properly secured
- While travelling make sure the refrigerator door is locked
- Ensure that the handbrake of the trailer has been correctly released
- Check the electrical cord has been disconnected and stored away
